The Wisconsin Idea has guided our state and university system for more than a century. The University of Wisconsin provides affordable, quality education for residents in communities all across Wisconsin.
But the essence and spirit of the Wisconsin Idea is under attack. Proposed changes and budget cuts would grant more power to the unelected, unaccountable Board of Regents, threatening the core guarantees of shared governance and tenure. Combined with the proposed $300 million budget cuts, students, faculty, and parents will all see diminished value and higher education costs.
We the undersigned oppose the proposed cut to the University of Wisconsin System, and further, we oppose the move to a public authority. In addition, we oppose any change to the language of the mission of the university or the guarantees of tenure & shared governance in state statute. Wisconsin is stronger if we invest in the university and support the legacy of The Wisconsin Idea.
